What Do Ghost Touch, Flickering, and Black Screen Mean?

Some screen failures show up without a single visible crack:

• Ghost touch — the phone types, opens apps, or swipes on its own. Usually a failing digitizer (the touch layer) or damage from a drop or moisture. A screen replacement almost always cures it.
• Flickering or dimming — the display strobes, flickers at low brightness, or randomly dims. Often a failing panel or a loose display connector — sometimes reseating the connector is the whole fix, and that's what you'd pay for.
• Black screen, phone still on — it rings, alarms go off, it makes sounds, but the display is dead. Nine times out of ten that's the display, not the phone, and your data is still sitting there safe. Don't replace the phone over a dead screen.
• Lines or blotches that spread — pressure damage to the panel. It won't heal and usually worsens; sooner is cheaper than later, because a failing panel can eventually take touch input with it.
